I'm still wondering about this because I beat Team Chaotix's Rail Canyon extra mission and the time and score I got destroyed my normal mission stats.Also, am I allowed to do this as long as the normal and extra missions are the same?

Okay here's how it works.

There is an Extra times division. If the level is not listed in Extra (that's all Sonic, and four Chaotix levels) then you can submit times in it to the regular division.

For Scores, again Sonic is fair game. Chaotix is currently in dispute but for now you can also submit your scores there.

I think extra scores should be allowed because you could get the same score on the normal mission as well. If you can get a higher score in Seaside Hill by going through the whole level, all you have to do is skip 10 crabs on the regular mission.

But in levels like Power Plant, in extra, you can kill more enemies without ending the level, leading to more points. This is minor, but it is an advantage that must be looked at

crap, I have to look at what I did for PP-C

I think I did it in normal, but I used to do it in extra.

I think I did another stage like this way back as well, but I cant remember since this was never brought up and discussed like now.

edit:  ok I remember someone else asking this before, but still, no solution was put forth.

edit:  ok, I do remember I did get worse scores doing extra missions on chaotix.  that might have just been me and I started doing them in normal so I could do the entire stage while skipping items to save time.

In terms of stages that are basically the normal stage with a time limit, go ahead and use the extra mission. For some of the Chaotix extra missions, I think the best thing to do is for someone to test to see if the extra missions in SH, PP, BH, LJ, HC, and FF have more lenient grading for time bonuses. If the grading for time bonuses is the same, I say let them in. If not, more discussion is needed. Still, this is a good question and good discussion.

Okay, I've come up with a basic experiment design to settle the issue.
1. Clear PP (Chaotix) normal and extra missions with times just barely above the following times: 4:00, 5:00, 6:00. Use of the TBG IS allowed since this is for the sake of research and to settle a disputed ruling. Just don't submit records from this experiment.
2. Write down the time bonus you get for clearing both stages with a (nearly) similar time, then compare the bonus from the normal mission to the extra mission.
3. Report your findings in this topic.

The time bonus formula is the same regardless of level.

From my score attack guide:

Time bonus: 50000 points - 80 x seconds spent in level, unless seconds spent in level is 90 or less (ie. 1:29 = 50000, 1:31 = 42720, 2:00 = 40400, 3:00 = 35600, etc)

Adn most people can't get around 4 minutes in PP-CX so that is another point about your experiment... but yeah, time bonus is always the same.
